(Guthrie Center, IA) — Guthrie County Sheriff Matt Harmann says the county is housing out of county prisoners longer than in county prisoners. Harmann presented a regular department update at Tuesday’s County Board of Supervisors meeting and while the County Jail has more inmates from Guthrie than other counties, the out of county prisoners have a longer stay
Harmaann says he has eliminated the transport position at the jail and deputies and jailers have picked up the slack.
Harmann also says the call for services in the county are up in the first 6 months from last year. In 2024, there were 3500 calls and so far this year, the sheriff’s office has responded to about 2700 calls which projects to a lot more. Harmann does say response time from his officers have improved and overtime hours have been limited. Harmann says the county sheriff’s office is fully staffed and he has implemented a new schedule where there is two deputies on duty throughout the day.
