
(Harlan, IA) — The Harlan Golf and Country Club hosted a Cross Country meet on Saturday and hometown Cyclones won the girls team competition while Sophomore Ashlyn Rau took home first place honors. The Riverside boys were the smallest school in the meet and yet the boys won another meet by 40 points over Red Oak.
Rau passed Grace Berglund of Glenwood with about 200 meters to go — she crossed a bridge and needed to go around a golf green and go uphill to the finish line. Before she got to the green, she got by Berglund and extended her lead on the home stretch. Rau finished with a time 18:30.15 ahead of Berglund at 18:40.01. Madelyn Hoss of Lewis Central was 3rd; Lily Miller of Treynor 4th and Julia Heslink of Harlan was 5th.
The top finisher for Atlantic was Katrina Williams in 9th place (20:51.74) to lead the Trojans to a 5th place finish in the team standings. Gabrielle Engler was 16th (21:47.63); Kaitlyn Hickman 21st (22:04.58); Ximena Mendez Cordero 31st (22:56.93); Leighton Wailes 33rd (23:11.89); Bella Brock 34th (23:14.85) and Claire Comer 62nd (25:14.43).
Madalyn Kerkmann of Treynor was 6th with Kadence Kotrous 18th and Lily Yochum of the Cardinals 19th. Iviana Schechinger had the best finish for Riverside in 48th. Cate Horn had the best finish for Red Oak in 47th.
On the boys side, LC went 1 and 2 with Kevin Coots (15:47.34) winning by 16 seconds over teammate Evan Lillie (16:03.39). Tri Center’s Haven Weers finished 3rd (16:19.13); Emmanuel Grass of Red Oak was 4th and Dawson Henderson of Riverside (16:25.51) rounded out the top 5. The Bulldogs had runners in 6th and 7th with Brody Henderson (16:34.03) and Owen Fenner (16:39.79). Cruz Jacquez of the Bulldogs was 14th; Eli Hudnall 20th; James McCready 30th; and Trig Drahota 44th.
Atlantic finished 10th out 16 teams with Mason Betts the top runner in 9th (16:57.40). Thomas Engler 49th (18:47.78); Kouper Kinney 56th (18:56.50); Anthony Akers 58th (19:01.17); Caleb Andersen 68th (19:39.45); D’Artagnan Hansen 74th (20:02.95); Preston Williams 79th (20:19.16).
Harlan finished 8th on the boys side with Jeffrey Gross in 11th (17:06.59); Dayton Wiederien of Kuemper Catholic was 8th. Jackson Walter of St. Albert 17th. Kevin Sanchez of Denison Schleswig 19th.
