(Audubon, IA) — It has been an explosive start to the football season for Audubon going 3-0 with three blowout wins and the Wheelers have not even had their best offensive player at 100 percent.
Senior QB Carson Wessel started the season with a shoulder injury after a week zero scrimmage and Audubon has slowly worked him onto the field. He only carried the ball twice in a 64-18 win over Remsen St. Mary’s, only five times for minus 4 yards in a 76-8 victory over Griswold, but last Friday, Wessel pretty much was all out with 9 carries for 128 yards and 4 TD plus returned an interception for another score in a 84-7 thrashing against Ar-We-Va. Wessel teams with Aiden Kjergaard and Mason Kasperbauer in the backfield and Carson says they compliment each other well
Wessel has not seen a lot of time on defense because of his injuries but he says the guys up front are finding a way to make things happen
Audubon moved up two spots this week in the Radio Iowa poll from #7 to #5 but they were not ranked in the pre-season polls and it was not just the Radio Iowa poll. Wessel says they have used that as motivation
Wessel says football is a big deal at Audubon — the team has just one losing season in the last 15 years and each year, the seniors pass along the Wheeler tradition to the next wave of players
