(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board will take action on two resolutions at a special meeting on Thursday evening, September 18.
One of the resolutions is for calling an election on the issuance of $22.5 million in general obligation school bonds. The $22.5 million general obligation bond referendum is for improvements and expansion projects at Washington Elementary, Schuler Elementary, Atlantic Middle School, and Atlantic High School.
The school board will act on a second resolution regarding a petition requesting an election on the proposed issuance of approximately $18.5 million school infrastructure sales, services, and use tax revenue bonds. The school board proposes to use the sales tax bond, repaid with state sales tax revenue (not local property taxes), to build a multipurpose indoor practice facility at the high school. It would be used for academics during the day and for student and community activities at other times, helping address limited gym space and expanding access for all grades.
Last week, during the public comment section of Wednesday’s Atlantic School Board Meeting, Justin Williams addressed the petition he filed regarding the issuance of sales tax bonds to fund the construction of a multipurpose practice facility/field house. Williams said the petition contained 500 signatures of eligible electors, requesting that the school board place it on the ballot to allow the public to decide.
The board will consider either rescinding the sales tax revenue bond funding for the project or approving placing this project as a ballot question on the November 4 election pursuant to the petition received.
The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the High School Media Center.
