(Creston) Security footage from a nearby home leads to multiple citations following a single-vehicle crash in Creston.
According to a press release, at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, two Creston Police officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a tree at 427 Wyoming Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a 2007 Buick Lucerne in the yard with the front driver’s side tire smashed against the tree.
Officers noted that the rear end of the vehicle appeared to have slid several feet toward the house after the collision. The teenage driver told police he was traveling at 30 miles per hour—five miles over the posted speed limit—when he lost control of the steering, causing the car to veer off the road and into the yard.
The teen’s mother informed officers that the vehicle was owned by her other son and was not insured. Initially, no citations were issued due to the lack of injuries and minimal property damage.
However, after a neighbor provided security camera footage capturing the moments leading up to the crash, officers decided to reopen the case. According to the responding officer, the video showed the vehicle traveling at an extremely high rate of speed. As it entered the intersection, the car went airborne, skidded sideways, jumped the curb, and ultimately crashed into the yard, striking a tree.
Given the discrepancy between the footage and the driver’s original account, officers visited the teen’s residence to speak with him and his mother. After showing them the video, officers issued multiple citations to the driver, including reckless driving, failure to maintain control, and failure to provide proof of financial responsibility in an accident. Additionally, another vehicle seen following the Buick in the footage was cited for careless driving.
