(Atlantic) On August 28, Atlantic City Administrator John Lund issued a press release announcing the resignation of Longtime Atlantic City Councilman Gerald Brink due to health reasons. The Atlantic City Council will discuss the process of filling the empty seat at the September 3 City Council meeting.
Atlantic City Administrator John Lund says the mayor has been reviewing the proper process for filling the vacant At-Large Council seat. According to the Iowa League of Cities, it is now too close to the November 2025 general election to hold a special election. That leaves the city with one option—appointing a caretaker to serve until voters elect a new Councilmember this fall.
By law, the city must first publish a public notice in the local newspaper for a period of no fewer than four days and no more than 20 days before taking action. The notice will inform residents that the Council intends to fill the vacancy by appointment. The Council is required to act within 60 days.
Once the notice is posted, residents may submit letters of interest to City Hall for consideration. The Council will then hold public interviews with each applicant, followed by a public vote. When one candidate receives a majority vote, they will be appointed to the seat for the remainder of the term. The Council must then formally vote down the other applicants; after which, the mayor will swear in the new Council member.
Voters will ultimately decide who serves a full term in the At-Large seat during the general election on November 4, 2025.
The regular meeting of the Atlantic City Council will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, starting at 5:30 p.m.
