(Atlantic) Glenwood’s potent passing game, strong special teams, and a dominant second quarter powered them to a 32-7 victory over Atlantic in a non-district football matchup Friday night in Atlantic.
Last season, Cole Staudt threw for over 1,700 yards, and it looks like new starting quarterback Ben Carlo is ready to carry that torch. In his debut, Carlo completed 13 of 24 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns—each to a different receiver.
Senior kicker Aaron Christian made a strong impression, drilling field goals from 23, 35, 39, and 43 yards. Glenwood also racked up 137 yards on the ground and finished the night with 369 yards of total offense.
The Rams’ defense showed promise as well, limiting the Trojans to just 90 rushing yards and 20 passing yards. Atlantic’s lone score came late in the game on a 33-yard touchdown run by backup running back Landon Hagen.
Atlantic won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. After the Trojans stuffed Glenwood’s first run, it didn’t take long for Coach Faust to test his new quarterback. On just the second play of the opening drive, Ben Carlo launched a missile deep downfield to Kaden Crouch for a 73-yard touchdown. Christian added the extra point to give Glenwood a 7-0 lead just 47 seconds into the game.
Atlantic responded with what would be one of its longest drives of the night, but a holding penalty stalled their momentum deep in Glenwood territory. The Trojans limited Rams to field goal attempt late in the first quarter, and Aaron Christian came through with a 39-yarder to put the Rams up 10-0.
Glenwood broke the game open in the second quarter. Carlo connected with Jack Johnson on a 50-yard TD strike, and Ethan Eiseman for 24 yards, and Christian drilled a 23-yard field goal to give the Rams a 26-0 lead at the break.
The Rams extended their lead to 32-0 on Aaron Christian field goals of 35, and 43 yards. The Trojans scored with 4:50 left in the contest on Landon Hagen’s 33-yard run.
The Trojans travel to Denison-Schleswig for a non-district football game next Friday night. Glenwood travels to Harlan.
