(Ames, IA) — Iowa St. is looking strong to start the season and showed on Saturday there was no jet lag from their return from Ireland. ISU rolled past South Dakota 55-7 at Jack Trice Stadium.
Junior QB Rocco Becht completed his first 14 passes and finished 19-20 for 278 yards and three touchdowns — the 95 percent completion percentage set a new school record for a single game. Becht has now thrown a TD pass in 20 straight games which is also an Iowa St. record.
Junior TE Ben Brahmer had a big game in the receiving category, leading ISU with 7 catches for 47 yards and caught two TD passes from 4 and 3 yards. Junior TE Gabe Burkle had 4 receptions for 85 yards and a TD. Junior WR Xavier Townsend had 3 catches for 34 yards. Freshman Dylan Lee led the ground game with 13 carries for 83 yards and a score — all coming in the second half. Backup QB Freshman Alex Manske from Algona was 4-5 passing for 28 yards and had a TD run. Junior Abu Sama III had a TD run as well.
Iowa St. had 529 yards of total offense compared to just 209 for South Dakota. Former Iowa St. QB Aidan Bouman who is now the starter for the Coyotes was 15-29 passing for 126 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT.
Speaking of records, Sophomore Kyle Konrardy set a new Cyclone record by kicking a 63 yard field goal just before the end of the first half.
Iowa St. is now 2-0 on the season and will defend the Cy Hawk Trophy next week, hosting Iowa, kickoff at 11:00 am, Cyclone Pre Game at 9 am on KSOM.
