(Atlantic) Harvest operations got underway on Monday afternoon (Aug. 25) at Milk Unlimited, located south of Atlantic. Managing Partner Kelly Cunningham says corn silage yields are running close to — and possibly a bit better than — last year.
All of the farm’s corn is chopped for silage, coming from fields that have grown continuous corn for nearly three decades. The crop is cut into quarter-inch particles, then processed through a roller mill to the size of a dime before being fed to the dairy herd.
Cunningham believes this fall could set records.
Milk Unlimited is home to about 3,400 cows, with 2,800 currently milking. The dairy is coming off its best year yet, averaging around 90 pounds of milk per cow, per day. That equates to roughly 32,000 to 35,000 gallons of milk daily.
Now in its 27th year, Milk Unlimited remains a thriving company. Cunningham credits a mindset of learning and improvement as the foundation for maintaining the operation’s strength over nearly three decades.
Milk Unlimited, located at 59100 Memphis Road, Atlantic, Iowa, produces around 32-35,000 gallons per day.
