(Atlantic) With a packed room, the Atlantic School Board heard from at least six individuals Wednesday night who spoke out about changes to the vocal music program.
Michelle Schuler, who had four children graduate from the district, said her daughter was deeply involved in every aspect of the vocal music program. Schuler has also served as an accompanist in various capacities over the past 37 years. She said her heart is invested in the program and in the students.
Sophie Johnson, a senior at AHS, said that due to some physical disabilities, she is unable to participate in sports, but she is committed to the choir and show choir program.
Mary McBride, an alumna of AHS and the mother of three current students in band and choir, said this is how school programs slowly start to disappear.
All individuals asked that the band director be fairly compensated for the additional work he is taking on. They also want to ensure that all music students have access to the lessons and opportunities they deserve.
Later in the meeting, High School Principal Heather McKay addressed this issue while discussing unfilled teacher positions.
McKay said they will also meet with the music department to hear any ideas the department may have that they have not yet considered.
