(Des Moines) Iowa suffers from a school bus driver shortage. Iowa House District #18 Representative Tom Moore of Griswold is leading a bill relating to the instruction protocol of school bus drivers. The bill seeks to make the licensure procedure less complicated by requiring the DOE and the DOT to come together to formulate one set of requirements.
Audio PlayerNow, the Department of Education must accept proof that a person successfully completed entry-level driver training if that training meets federal requirements for school bus driver training. Moreover, school bus drivers must complete additional training every two years to continue driving a school bus.
Representative Moore ran a second bill that added specialized psychologists to the list of health care providers who can determine school concussion protocols. Specifically, for a psychologist to be considered specialized, they must hold a doctorate in psychology and have specialized training in neuropsychology or concussion management. This bill passed with bipartisan support on Tuesday.
