(Des Moines) Strong winds and low relative humidity will increase the fire danger across the state today. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for central and southern Iowa from noon to 6:00 p.m. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Gusty northwest winds will peak at 55 mph at times in the afternoon. Relative humidity will drop to around 30%, with gradual improvement possible as clouds approach from the north. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly occur. Strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
