(Des Moines, IA) – A Des Moines fifth-grader will be waking up happy this week after capturing a victory over former Olympic sprinter and Des Moines Schools Superintendent, Ian Roberts. The fifth-grader, Amayah Vilmael, was able to utilize her training and hard work to beat the Superintendent in a field day 100-meter dash race this past week.
Ian Roberts previously ran in the Olympics in Sidney back in 2000 and in the World Championships in Japan and Spain. He previously spent two decades as a classroom teacher and executive director before being named the Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in 2023.
This moment is something that Vilmael will remember forever. She earned praise and recognition from her friends and family nationwide alongside the former Olympic Athlete.
