(Audubon, IA) – The Audubon Wheelers are starting to gel with one another this softball season. Audubon’s schedule is a tough one to put it lightly, facing off against multiple ranked opponents Earlham and Atlantic already this season. The girls were just recently able to knock in another win on the season with a victory over Treynor on Wednesday in a 5-4 stretch that came down to good defense on both sides of the field. Head Coach Andrea Schwery is proud of her girls for a three-game conference winning streak and looks to continue making their mark.
Audubon features seven seniors this season with a combination of Exira-EHK and Audubon students. With a team of seniors comes a team of leaders on the field. Some of them have had to change their playing position or lineup position that they’ve had for almost two years to work for the team rather than for themselves.
The key to Audubon is in their pitching. Both Riley Miller and Alexis Obermeier lead the team this season in the circle with the freshman, Miller, taking charge in a majority of innings so far this season. Miller has pitched in 19 innings, allowing 10 hits, two earned runs, and pitched 29 strikeouts. On the other side, Obermeier has pitched in seven innings, allowing 13 hits, two earned runs, and has three strikeouts.
With the tough schedule will come a few losses. They fell to #10 in Class 3A Atlantic on Thursday 9-7 and will take on #5 Missouri Valley in Class 2A today. These are some tough matchups against some of the top teams in the state that give the Wheelers some motivation to compete moving forward.
Audubon will battle Missouri Valley tonight at home at 5:30 p.m. before jumping into the Atlantic Invite on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
