(Griswold, IA) – Winning is one way to describe the Griswold softball team at the beginning of the season. The Tigers have won four straight games to jump out of the gates which only continues to boost the confidence of the girls out on the field and at the plate. Head Coach Jody Rossell is proud of how her girls have handled some tough situations and been able to go up to the plate and hit the ball very well.
Two Tigers have been leading the way at the plate so far with Marissa Askeland and Abby Gohlinghorst making consistent contact with the softball through four games. Askeland has gone 6-12 at the plate with five singles, a double, and four RBIs. Gohlinghorst has gone 7-9 with six singles, a double, and three RBIs. The team as a whole is batting .355 at the plate and has a .500 slugging percentage.
While hitting is key, the defense also needs to be precise and focused. The Tigers have been led in the circle by Karly Millikan who already has 30 strikeouts in four games and has only allowed five hits and no earned runs through 14 innings pitched. Her work ethic and confidence continue to help lead the defense this season.
The summer season allows these girls to be together not only on the field but off the field. This team revolves around a family environment with one common goal.
Griswold features a non-conference game against Boyer Valley tonight, hosts Fremont-Mills on Friday, and jumps into the Atlantic Invite on Saturday. These next few days will determine the course of action for Griswold and help them continue to build their confidence moving forward.
KSOM 96.5 and Western Iowa Today TV will have the broadcast of Friday’s game against Fremont-Mills with the pregame show starting at 5:10 p.m.
