(West Des Moines, IA) – The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Board of Directors approved a move that will separate girl’s wrestling into two different classes for the 2024-25 season. This move represents the 64 largest wrestling schools in Class 2A while the remaining schools will compete in Class 1A.
Wrestlers will now compete to qualify in their respective classes for the state tournament at the regional meet that starts on Friday, January 31st. Each weight class will then feature the top 16 qualifiers for the State Wrestling Tournament that will be hosted in Coralville from February 6th through the 7th. The State Wrestling Tournament remains relatively unchanged with separate sessions for each class on February 6th and combined sessions on February 7th.
IGHSAU Executive Director Erin Gerlich was able to be a part of one of the biggest moves since being named Executive Director just a month ago. She stated, “The rapid rise of participants in girl’s wrestling has exceeded even our expectations. Adding a second class is the next building block in our efforts to continue to help the sport grow. The hope is that the addition of a second class will encourage more schools to add girls’ wrestling programs.”
While girl’s wrestling was just recently sanctioned in 2022, it has continued to be one of the largest growing sports in the state of Iowa. A total of 204 schools sponsored a girls’ wrestling program and 61 other schools were involved in cooperative sharing agreements.
