(Atlantic) The Atlantic FFA Chapter showcased outstanding performance at the Kirkwood Community College annual Iowa FFA Horse Judging Career Development Event. Competing among peers across the state, Atlantic FFA demonstrated its prowess in Equine Science with commendable achievements.
Atlantic FFA earned a silver medal for their collective efforts, led by team members Kayedance Sturm, Clara Kennedy, Rylan Martin, Paislee Klever, and Callie Rudy. The event, designed to test agricultural knowledge and skills, involved evaluating halter and performance classes, answering related questions, and providing oral justifications for their placements. Participants took part in a written examination and a team problem-solving challenge.
In the Performance division, Kayedance Sturm achieved an exceptional score of 149 out of 150 possible points, highlighting her expertise and dedication.
A notable aspect of this year’s competition was the participation of eighth-grade members, including Clara Kennedy, Paislee Klever, Rylan Martin, and Callie Rudy. Their inclusion underscores Atlantic FFA’s commitment to nurturing young talent and preparing them for future agricultural pursuits.
Reflecting on their experience, Clara Kennedy remarked, “I was impressed with our placing because ¾ of the team are 8th graders and this was our first FFA contest.” Callie Rudy added, “I thought it was a lot of fun. This event pushed us outside of our comfort zone and we all tried our hardest with the work paying off.” Paislee Klever shared, “For doing this for my first time and trying something new I thought it was a great experience.” Rylan Martin concluded, “Although some parts were a little rough, I was proud of myself and the team for trying our hardest and putting in as much effort as possible.”
The Iowa FFA Horse Career Development Event was supported by the Iowa FFA Foundation Gold Standard Partners and coordinated at the Iowa Equestrian Center in Cedar Rapids. Kirkwood Community College provided hospitality to all participants. Mary Pohlmann from Truro served as the official judge for the event.
