(Iowa) Speed cameras are now offline due to a new law restricting speed cameras in Iowa. The new law was signed by Governor Kim Reynolds last month. Cameras in downtown Des Moines and the freeway have been inactive since May 17.
The bill requires cities and counties to apply for a permit from the Department of Transportation to have activated speed cameras. The applications are due by July 1. They have until October 1 to approve or deny cities’ speed camera requests.
The Cameras wouldn’t be able to issue a citation unless a vehicle is going at least ten miles an hour over the speed limit. Revenue from citations would be used for transportation infrastructure or to offset costs for police and fire.
