(Des Moines, IA) – Drake Head Basketball Coach Darian DeVries is no longer going to be at the reins of the Bulldogs basketball program. On Sunday, it was announced that he is the new Men’s Basketball Coach at West Virginia University.
DeVries led the Drake Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournaments in 2021, 2023, and 2024. His overall record was 150-55 while leading Drake to four consecutive 25-win seasons for the first time in school history. During his tenure, he carried Drake to their first tournament win since 1971 when they were able to capture a win in 2021. He also just led them back to the tournament after winning the MVC Tournament, winning in back-to-back seasons.
Drake Director of Athletics Brian Hardin said, “It is easy to say that Darian DeVries has left our men’s basketball program and our athletics department in incredible positions thanks to his six years at Drake. Darian led the Drake men’s basketball team to new heights on the court while establishing an elite culture off the court. He was an incredible mentor to the men in our men’s basketball program for the last six years and a wonderful representative of our department. We are grateful to Darian for his leadership and wish him the best in his next journey.”
DeVries was named the MVC Coach of the Year in both 2019 and 2021 while leading Tucker DeVries to back-to-back MVC Larry Bird Player of the Year Awards in 2023 and 2024.
The basketball program will now be unfilled for now as they’ll start a national search. Marty Richter takes the interim Head Coach position in the meantime.
