(Guthrie Center, IA)- Six state qualifiers and two place winners are the staples of the strong season that the Chargers wrestling team had this season. Behind head coach Lane Rumelhart and his coaching staff, plus the two state podium finishers of the lone seniors Tegan Slaybaugh and Payton Jacobe, AC/GC picked up 17 dual wins this season plus those aforementioned state qualifiers. State wrestling is hardly a week past, and Rumelhart is still adjusting to life without wrestling practices to head to immediately after work. However, it has given him time to reflect on the performances he saw in Des Moines including the end of a historic senior year for Slaybaugh.
That young talent is what Rumelhart wants to build this team around in the coming years, especially with the four returning state qualifiers Ryder Cline, Michael Fuller, Carter Richter, and Gavin Sloss. Add on the incoming eighth graders/soon-to-be freshmen joining the team in the fall and it will be the fourth straight year of roster growth in the wrestling room. For those who want to excel on the mats, he has made it clear what needs to be done before November.
The loss of the two seniors is hard but when it comes to the team leadership Rumelhart says it’s not something he’s overly worried about with his soon-to-be seniors and the rest of the squad.
AC/GC Chargers wrestling will return to the mats this November but for now, many of the wrestlers look forward to summer sports and camps while Coach Rumelhart looks forward to cheering them on outside of wrestling.
