(Atlantic, IA) — The 3A Boys District meet came down to the final hole of the day and Atlantic earned a tie and won the tiebreaker to advance to the State Golf Meet. Atlantic’s Hudson McLaren got a par on number 16 while Humboldt’s Dawson Sleiter got a bogey — that moved the Trojans and the Wildcats into a third place tie. The tiebreaker was the 5th golfer score and Jack Muller scored an 83 which was three strokes better than Cooper Theesfeld’s 87.
The whole match came down to almost a match play situation between McLaren and Sleiter who were in the same group. They teed off on hole 17 so the 16th hole was their last of the day. McLaren had bogeyed #13; Sleiter bogeyed #14. As the group hit the 15th hole, everybody else was finished so it came down to a battle between the two and Atlantic and Humboldt were tied. McLaren bogeyed #15 and Sleiter parred as the Wildcats took a one stroke lead. However, it was McLaren’s par on the 412 yard par four to give the Trojans the win. McLaren finished with a (+2) 71 and was 9th place overall.
Brady Wood finished in 11th place with a 73; Gage Gross was 13th with a 74; Sam Brosam was 16th with a 74.
Muller, meanwhile, had rarely had his score count all season long but it did on this day. Muller ended up getting pars on three of his last four holes to finish with an 83 while Theesfeld bogeyed the last three holes he played for an 87. Braxton Hass rounded out the scoring for the Trojans with an 84.
