(Iowa City, IA) – The record has been broken. Caitlin Clark has officially broken the NCAA all-time scoring record alongside breaking an Iowa program record for the most points in a single game as Iowa beat Michigan 106-89.
Caitlin Clark led the team in scoring with a career-high 49 points, 13 assists, and also hauled in five boards. The senior now has 3,569 total points in her career, which marks the most in NCAA history. She also marked the most points for a Hawkeye in a game while tying her career-high in three-point field goals with nine. She also scored the most points in a single quarter in Iowa history with a total of 23 points in the first quarter. Clark is just the fourth Hawkeye to score 40 or more points in a single game. The superstar has 18 games where she had 30+ points and 10+ assists, a feat that no other player in women’s college basketball has achieved. With just one other feat to mention, Clark is the only player in the nation to score 800+ points, dish out 175+ assists, and grab 150+ rebounds in a single season.
“It was an incredible night for Caitlin, our team, and the university. Everyone that came out tonight, thank you. It was a huge success. I couldn’t be more proud of Caitlin. It was an incredible performance by our squad.” Iowa was also led by Kate Martin with double-digits as she had 20 points on the night and shot 7-11 from the hardwood. Hannah Stuelke shot 4-6 from the field and knocked in 13 points on the night.
On the opposite end for Michigan, Jordan Hobbs led in scoring with 16 points and snagged five rebounds. Lauren Hansen followed up right behind as she shot 6-10 from the field and had 14 points on the night. Both Chyra Evans and Taylor Woodson scored 13 points each on the night while combining for nine rebounds. Laila Phelia shot just 5-15 but had 12 points on the night for the Wolverines. Finishing off the double-digit scorers was Cameron Williams with 10 points who also dished out two assists.
Michigan outrebounded Iowa 35-29 and had the advantage in blocking 3-2. The Wolverines also outscored the Hawkeyes in the paint 56-32. Iowa featured back-to-back home games where an Iowa women’s player broke the Carver-Hawkeye scoring record. Iowa outscored Michigan in points off turnovers 26-7 and in fast break points 25-7.
Iowa will wait a week for their next game against Indiana in the Hoosier state on Thursday, February 22nd for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
