(Audubon, IA)- It was only one wrestler for the Wheelers who made their way to Des Moines for the State Tournament, but a strong start to districts showed potential for a young Audubon squad. The lone wrestler to make it through the bracket last Saturday and into Wells Fargo this week was Lane Elmquist at 113 lbs, currently seeded at #22 with a matchup against Harlan’s #11 seed Jesse Jens. Regardless of how many wrestlers punched through, head coach Tyler Christensen was proud of how lots of his guys competed.
With plenty of more 8th graders to join the room come next winter, he’s liking their chances come postseason time in 2025. That’s not to take away from Elmquist’s accomplishment this season either. Christensen says, “he knows how to work hard and he knows what’s needed,” and with just a few days between districts and the state tournament, they’ve been working on honing in on what Elmquist is good at and then tweaking a few things as needed. Whatever happens, Coach Christensen plans to be there for Elmquist in whatever way he can be.
Class 2A wrestling begins bright and early at 9 am on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with updates on 96.5 KSOM, KS 95.7, Western Iowa Today TV, and KSOM Sports’ Facebook Page.
