(Iowa City, IA) – Iowa earned a win after last week’s loss to Penn State as they beat Minnesota 90-85 on Sunday for their sixth straight victory over Minnesota in the series. The Hawkeye’s win over Minnesota ended the Golden Gophers’ three-game winning streak.
Iowa was led on the afternoon by both Patrick McCaffery and Payton Sandfort as they each made seven buckets and scored 21 points. Sandfort also hauled in eight rebounds on the day and dished out four assists. Tony Perkins was just three points behind for a total of 18 points and six rebounds while dishing out four assists. With an exceptional performance was freshman Owen Freeman as he earned a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the fourth double-double in his career.
For the Golden Gophers, Minnesota was led by both Dawson Garcia and Braeden Carrington with 18 points each. Garcia also hauled in seven rebounds while going 7-8 from the hardwood. Mike Mitchell Jr. was just a point behind Garcia and Carrington with 17 points and whipped out four assists. Right behind Mitchell Jr. was Cam Christie with a total of 15 points and four boards. Parker Fox finished off double-digit scorers with 10 points and also had five rebounds.
Iowa outrebounded Minnesota 39-35 while also dominating in the paint with a 44-28 advantage. Both teams had seven steals on the night and shot around 46% from the field. Minnesota had the advantage in three-point percentage at 46.2% versus Iowa’s 33.3% and in bench points 28-24.
The Hawkeyes return back to action on Wednesday, February 14th when they battle Maryland at College Park with a tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
