(Stillwater, OK)- It would be the second dual of the weekend in the Sooner State as the No. 4 Cyclones wrapped up the weekend with a dual against Oklahoma State. Friday night would be a great start for Iowa State as they dominated No. 18 Oklahoma in Norman with a 37-4 dual victory, their biggest win at Oklahoma in program history. Saturday night would be a tough upset loss at the hands of the Cowboys as No. 5 Oklahoma State took the 21-12 dual victory.
Against Oklahoma, ISU would sweep the first eight weight classes jumping out to a 33-0 lead over the Sooners. Unfortunately, the #2 ranked wrestler at 197 lbs, Stephen Buchanan of Oklahoma, would end the streak and earn a 19-5 major decision over ISU’s Caleb Helgeson. Yonger Bastida would help the Cyclones close Friday out on a high note as he picked up his 16th consecutive win on the year.
The Cowboys would come out firing on Saturday night as they took the first three matches at 125, 133, and 141 lbs to lead 10-0. Casey Swiderski of Iowa State got them on the board first at 149 lbs with his 8-2 decision victory but it would be back and forth and not enough for the Cyclones the rest of the night. Bonus point wins propelled Oklahoma State to the top-five victory as they notched three major decision wins, with two being in the final three matches. Bastida would extend the undefeated streak to 17 to end the dual.
It’s all home duals in Ames for the Cyclones in February as they’ll kick the month off with a dual against West Virginia on Friday, February 2nd starting at 7 pm.
