(Atlantic) Aubrey Schwieso scored 32 points to lead Harlan to a 69-37 win over Atlantic in a girls’ basketball game at Atlantic on Thursday.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 19-8 first-quarter lead. Schwieso played a big part in the early run with 11 points, two from behind the three-point line. The junior guard knocked two more three-point shots in the second quarter and one inside the arc for eight of Cyclone’s 13. Hannah Sondermon’s buzzer-beater three-point bucket gave the visitors a 32-15 lead at the break.
Schwieso and Harlan came out firing in the third quarter with 22 points. Schwieso again led the charge with 10, Erica Rust added six points from close range, and the Cyclones led 54-26. Freshmen Kenzley Bruck led the Cyclones, scoring in the final frame with six, and Schwieso knocked down her sixth three for the final, 69-37.
Harlan played Smothering zone defense, holding the Trojans to single-digits in the first and second quarter and 11 in the third and fourth.
Besides Schwieso’s 32, Eric Rust finished with 14, Molly Swensen, 6, Kenzley Bruck, 6, Hannah Sonderman, 5, Ava Monson, 4, and Grace Albertsen, 2.
Maddie Richter led Atlantic with nine points, Zoey Kirchhoff and Claire Pellett with 6, Katrina Williams, Paytn Harter, Brynn Lamp, and Jillian Saathoff scored 2.
Harlan extends its record to 12-2 and travels to Creston on Friday. Atlantic is now 5-11, and take to the road at St. Albert.
