(Omaha, NE) — State health officials are voicing concern amid an ongoing national shortage of penicillin and other antibiotics. Two months ago, officials with Pfizer warned that the pharmaceutical manufacturer would soon be out of children’s formulation of Bicillin, a common, injectable form of the antibiotic. Health authorities say Bicillin is used to treat strep throat and various skin infections in children, while physicians reportedly count on penicillin to treat syphilis in adults. Health officials the shortage comes as Nebraska health officials are tracking record-high cases of the sexually transmitted disease since the beginning of the year.
