(Iowa City, IA) — The son of University of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery will avoid prison time for his role in a crash that killed a National Guard soldier. Iowa City police said Wednesday that John McCaffery had been identified and cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. He faces a one-thousand dollar fine or having his license suspended for up to six months. McCaffrey’s family says the 16-year-old was at an intersection on May 22nd when another driver waved Corey Hite into McCaffrey’s path while Hite was jogging in the area. McCaffery’s family says investigators told them the deadly accident was unavoidable and they are deeply sorry for Hite’s death.
