Details Released on Fatal Semi vs Train Accident in Poweshiek County

(Poweshiek Co.) The Iowa State Patrol has released more information on a fatal crash between a semi and a train in Poweshiek County Wednesday.

The accident happened at 12:35 p.m. on Highway 21. 38-year-old Michael Orton, of Palmyra, Missouri, was driving a 2015 Kenworth semi southbound and failed to yield at the railroad crossing. The semi was struck by a westbound Iowa Interstate Railroad Train. The accident caused the train to derail.

Michael Orton’s son, 14-year-old Robert Orton, a passenger in the semi, was killed in the accident. Michael Orton was transported to UIHC by Aircare.

The trains conductor and engineer were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
