(Oakland) The Oakland Municipal Water Utility found E. coli in the well on Friday, April 7th from Well #9. This well has been taken out of service for now and is being shock chlorinated and is no longer providing water to customers. Multiple tests have been taken of the distribution system and there is no indication of E. coli in the treated water.
Fecal indicators are microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause short-term health effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems
What should I do?
- This situation does not require you take immediate action. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately.
- You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
- People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.
