(Des Moines, IA) — The newest COVID variant is spreading, but overall respiratory virus cases are down in Iowa. The Centers for Disease Control says the new XBB variant is now nearly 30-percent of Covid cases. They expect it to become the dominant variant in the next couple weeks. Overall, in Iowa, cases of Covid, RSV, and Influenza are declining. According to the Iowa Department of Human Services there were just over two-thousand new Covid cases in Iowa in the latest 7-day report. That’s dramatically lower than the peak of ten-thousand last year. RSV and flu cases are also down.
