(Greenfield) Iowa House District #23 State Representative Ray Sorensen says the Education and Appropriations Committee passed a three-percent increase for State Supplemental Assistance and should be voting on it this week.
The Republican Representative from Greenfield says this number must be agreed upon with the Senator and the Governor, who originally proposed a two and 2.5-percent increase.
“We feel strongly that at least three percent is the right number to support public schools,” said Sorensen. “Many school administrators I talked to were excited that we were considering three percent.”
Supplemental State Aid, often called SSA, is the new funding the state commits to local school districts. The legislature must set this figure for the next fiscal year each year within the first 30 days of the legislative session.
Representative Sorensen says the increase the committee voted on amounts to $106 million more than Fiscal Year 2023 and a total of about $3.7 billion to School Foundation Aid. He said it would bring per pupil funding to $7,635 per student, an increase of $222 over Fiscal Year 2023.
Representative Sorensen serves constituents in Adair, Madison, Dallas, Union, and Clarke counties.
