(Anita) Only 3% of National Speech and Debate Association members earn Premier Distinction prior to graduation. CAM’s Bradyn Bohnsack has done so and he’s only a junior.
Bohnsack spoke with KSOM/KS95.7 News about the honor. “It definitely means a lot. It took a lot of hard work to get there and a lot of dedication to it.”
Points can be earned through competition, service, and leadership activities. Examples include debating in the classroom, volunteering, and public speaking. “It’s just definitely practice. That’s all I really did is jus practice a lot and then I just went to competitions and did the best that I could.”
Bohnsack initially had to be urged into giving Speech and Debate a try. “So I really wasn’t interested in doing Speech and Debate. Then I got an e-mail from the debate coach saying that a teacher thought I would be good at it. My mom said I should try it my first year and so I went to the first practice and after that I just loved Debate and got into Speech after that.”
He’s part of a rich tradition for in CAM Speech and Debate. Last year they were ranked #1 in the state and sent 25 events to the state individual contest. Bohnsack credits Debate coach Kirk Kelloway and Speech coach Manda Thomas for their help along the way.
