(Sergeant Bluff) #16 Atlantic defeated #20 Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley in a Regional Dual Semi-final and fell short to #3 Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the Regional Final at Sergeant Bluff on Tuesday night.
The Trojans won eight of the fourteen matches and topped Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley 42-31. The dual started at (113) pounds. Josh Hass won by decision, and Aiden Smith, wrestling up at (120), followed with a tech fall for an 8-0 Atlantic lead.
The Trojans never trailed, but the Nighthawks made the dual interesting with three falls, a major decision, and a win by decision.
Angel Gasca’s pin at 126 brought BHRV within two points, 8-6. The Trojans followed with back-to-back pins by Jayden Cox (132) and Easton O’Brien at (138), and pushed the lead to 20-6. BHRV closed the gap to 20-12 on Brock Mulder’s pin for the Nighthawks at (145). Tanner O’Brien countered with a pin for the Trojans at (152), and a 26-12 advantage.
The Nighthawks rallied with Zach Strubbe’s fall at (160), 26-18. Atlantic’s Jarrett Armstrong pinned Isaac Van Beek at (170) to push the lead to 32-18.
Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley turned the dual into a nail-biter with three straight wins. Jace Mulder won by major decision at (182), Kevin Quijada followed with a pin at (195), and Reagan Maassen polished off the run with a decision at (220), narrowing the score to 32-31 in favor of Atlantic with two matches left.
Sophomore Evan Sorensen, wrestling at heavyweight, sealed the deal with a dramatic pin, and Braxton Hass (106) polished off the match with a 13-2 major decision pushing the final to 42-31.
Atlantic then squared off against Sergeant Bluff-Luton for a trip to the state duals but fell short 41-28. The Warriors opened the match with six straight wins and won eight bouts.
The winners for the Trojans were Jarrett Armstrong, by fall at (170), Brenden Casey, a major decision at (182), and pins from Miles Mundorf and Evan Sorensen at (220) and (285), respectively. The Trojans’ regular season comes to a close. Next up is the District Tournament at Glenwood on February 11.
