(Clarinda) Colton Rasmussen scored 22 points, and Carter Pellett ripped down 17 rebounds to lead Atlantic to a 53-41 victory at Clarinda on Tuesday night. The Trojan’s win marked a first for both teams. Atlantic picked up its first win of the young season and handed the Cardinals its’ first loss.
Jayden Proehl sank two long-range baskets for Atlantic in the first eight minutes to put his squad up 12-11. Taydn Brown and Wyatt Schmitt led the Cardinals with four points each.
The Trojan’s defense tightened in the second quarter, controlled the boards, and outscored Clarinda 12-6 for a 24-17 lead at the break. Atlantic opened up a 47-28 lead in the second half. Clarinda didn’t shy away. Kade Engstrand buried a three-point shot, and Wyatt Schmitt went four-four at the line, shaving the Trojans’ lead to nine points. Colton Rasmussen countered for the visitors with a field goal and eight-for-eight shooting at the free throw in the final quarter to secure the road win for the Trojans.
Besides Rasmussen’s 22 points, Ryder Burk scored eight points, including two three-point baskets; Jayden Proehl finished the night with seven, Jackson McLaren, six, and Kinnick Juhl chipped in three points.
Brown and Schmitt finished the game with 10 points each, Isaac Jones, seven; Engstrand, seven; Creighton Tuzzio, three; Andrew Jones and Adam Johnson, two points.
Atlantic goes to 1-2 on the season and travels to Creston on Friday night. Clarinda is 3-1 and matches up with Glenwood on Friday.
