(Guthrie Center) ACGC will scrimmage Boone next week and kick off their season the following Monday at Nodaway Valley.
A very deep group is the way ACGC girls basketball coach Brad Baudler describes his team this year. “I have three seniors, I think six juniors, and all are capable of playing. I have a sophomore that played last year and a some freshmen that can play. We are going to have a really deep bench and really competitive team which is a good thing to have. I’ve seen a lot of hart, I’ve seen a lot of grit, and just working their tails off. I’m excited to see what they can do.”
Their win total has finished in double figures for three straight years. They hung their hat on defense last year. “We want to disrupt the offense. We talk about effort plays. Can you get tipped passes, get on the floor, take a charge, get rebounds. That’s a big thing and then we try to keep the ball on one side of the floor. When they can’t swing the ball it makes it a lot harder for them to run offense.” Baudler lists Shay Lemke, Taylor Carlson, and Kelsey Carlson as a few of the leaders in that regard.
Coach Baudler saw some encouraging things from his team over the offseason, especially when they went to Okoboji. “I saw a lot of competing and we were in games all the time. That’s what I want. It’s a team goal to be competitive in every game.”
A sophomore and a junior led the team in scoring last year with Mersadez Richter at 8.2 points per contest and Saige O’Brien at 8.1.
