(Avoca) AHSTW will have a deep group of boys wrestlers this season.
Coach Evan McCarthy reports numbers are really good for the Vikings. “I think we are going to start the season with right around 30 wrestlers. We are really excited about that. Our lineup appears that we’ll be able to fill every weight class. That makes it more likely that you can compete night in and night out at dual meets. We have some talented guys back. We have two returning state qualifiers and another three district qualifiers back. We are real excited about the season. I think we have a chance to have a pretty good squad.”
Nate Jorgensen at 195 pounds and Henry Lund at 220 are the returning state qualifiers. “We are expecting those guys to really anchor the end of our lineup along with whoever wins the heavyweight spot.”
Three underclassmen advanced past the sectional round last year. “Braden Fineran and Eli Collins qualified down at the lower weights and did a really nice job for us. Hopefully they are going to be guys we can lean on at those first seven weight classes for a lot of team points. Kayden Baxter was at 145 last year and got 3rd at a very good district that had the state champ in it. I think he’s probably going to be about as talented of a kid as we have on the mat this year. We are really looking forward to big things out of him.”
The Vikings start the year Thursday, December 1st with a quadrangular against Woodbine, Logan-Magnolia, and Audubon.
