(Harlan) The Harlan Cyclone girls basketball team is coming off of a 15 win season last year. Official practice started this week for girls basketball.
Coach Zach Klaassen indicates they are eager to get back to work. “Just a lot of fundamentals. Trying to get that ball back in the hands and build those skills back up.” Klaassen says, “The girls did play in a fall league up in Carroll and got some games under their belt up there, but you still don’t work on the fundamentals enough. That’s kind of been the focus along with some conditioning. We had quite a few red faces yesterday, but everybody made it through it.”
The top two scorers and leading rebounder have graduated with all-stater Raegen Wicks along with Claire Schmitz. Coach Klaassen comments on the weapons they do have returning. “Erica Rust played a decent amount towards the end of the season last year. She came on pretty strong for us. I thought she improved probably the most from the start of the season to the end of the season. Ava Monson was a starter for us last year and is back. We’ve got Hannah Sonderman coming back that played quite a bit and Aubrey Schwieso played a lot. We have four or five kids with quite a bit of varsity experience.”
He expects the Hawkeye Ten Conference race to be a little bit more balanced than it was last year when Glenwood went undefeated and Lewis Central finished 2nd with two losses.
Harlan opens the season November 22nd at Treynor.
