(Sully) Lynnville-Sully defeated AHSTW in a battle of two undefeated teams in a Class A quarterfinal game at Sully on Friday night.
The wet conditions negated the ability to throw the football, forcing both teams to rely on their rushing attack. The Vikings entered with 157 passing plays to 267 rushing downs, 1,753 yards passing, and 2,607 yards rushing. The Hawks had run the ball 296 times this season for 2,613 yards and passed just 78 times for 846 yards.
Corder Noun Harder scored two touchdowns, and Kyle Squires reached the end zone on a short run for the Hawks. Noun Harder, fourth in Class A with 33 touchdowns, raised his total to 35 with the two scores.
The two teams exchanged possessions early until late in the first quarter when Corder Noun Harder broke loose on a punt return, racing down the sideline for the 60-yard score to vault the home team to an 8-0 lead after the successful two-point try. This was the junior’s second kick return this season.
Lynnville-Sully’s second touchdown came midway through the second stanza when Kyle Squires polished off a drive with a two-yard run up the middle. The senior entered the game averaging seven yards per carry for 442 yards and reached the end zone for the ninth time this season.
The final tally for the Hawks came with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter on Corder Noun Harder’s two-yard plunge. Noun Harder piled up 1,649 rushing yards for an average of 13.3 yards per carry through the first ten games.
The Hawks enter the Class A semi-finals with an 11-0 record and face topped ranked West Hancock at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, in the Dome at Cedar Falls. The winner plays either Grundy Center or Woodbury Central in the finals.
AHSTW wraps up an outstanding season at 10-1.
