(Atlantic) Atlantic defeats Shenandoah and advances to the Class 3A Region #3 semi-finals on Wednesday. The Trojans downed the Fillies (25-23-23-25, 25-10, 25-19).
“It’s been a long time since Atlantic has won a Regional Volleyball game,” said Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake. “We will get after it at practice on Tuesday and give it a run on Wednesday.”
The Trojans broke a 1-1 tie in the first set and sat on the brink of the set point for six straight points before they could seal the deal. Atlantic led 24-17, and the Fillies clicked off six consecutive points before the Trojans cashed in on the final point and a 25-23 win.
Shenandoah returned the favor in the second set 25-23. Atlantic tied it at 20-20; Shenandoah scored three straight and held off the home team for the win. Atlantic dominated the third set. Shenandoah scored first, and the Trojans went on a roll, outscoring the Fillies 25-9 for a 25-10 final.
“The third set was a quiet win,” said Blake. “I told the girls we are not going to a fifth set; we will finish this thing right here and move on to the next round. And that is exactly what they did.”
Shenandoah played step-for-step with the Trojans, led 15-12 before Atlantic flipped the momentum, outscored Shenandoah down the stretch 8-5, tied it at 19-19, and closed out the set and the game with six straight points, 25-19.
Atlantic travels to Des Moines, Christian, for Regional Semi-final on Wednesday. We will have the broadcast on 95.7 F.M. and audio-streamed on westerniowatoday.com.
