(Atlantic) Atlantic remains in the Class 3A playoff hunt with two regular season games left on the schedule. The Trojans face Saydel on Friday night and end the season at Creston next week.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association ranks teams with the RPI system for playoff eligibility for Classes 3A, 4A, and 5A. The scoring includes a team’s wins, their opponent’s wins, and their opponent – opponents record. Teams are seeded for postseason play based on this formula. The first and second-place teams in the district are automatic; after that, it is the following four teams for a total of 16 teams. Atlantic currently stands at number 20 this week ahead of the game against Saydel.
Atlantic Head Football Coach Joe Brummer says much is to be decided, but his squad is in a decent spot.
The Trojans need to win out to be in contention, and they are coming off a 39-13 win over Knoxville in week seven.
Brummer said the offensive line did a good job, and fullback Tanner O’Brien a career-high 116 yards on the ground.
Coach Brummer describes Saydel as a young football team with an athletic quarterback, and he is just a sophomore. A.J. Olin has thrown for 519 yards and one touchdown.
The Trojans bring a balanced offensive attack to the contest on Friday night with 2,492 yards of offense, 1,395 yards passing, and 1,097 yards rushing. Dante Hedrington leads the ground game averaging 4.8 yards per carry for 561 yards. The junior has nearly 976 career yards and is 317 yards shy of entering the top twenty all-time for career rushing yards for Atlantic.
