(Harlan) Christina Roelofs and Shelby County Conservation have a series of events lined up at Prairie Rose State Park during Labor Day weekend.
Kayaking and a demonstration on snakes will be held on Saturday, an aquatic critter catch is scheduled for Sunday, and a two mile hike on Monday. Kayaking has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. “It’s just an easy way for people to get out and recreate or get out and go fishing. It’s way easier to cart a kayak around than a full sized boat.” They have fifteen kayaks along with lifejackets and paddles will be available for use starting at 10:00 a.m.
At 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Roelofs will discuss different type of snakes that can be found in Iowa. “Common ones would be brown snakes and garter snakes and fox snakes. They are great to have around. The smaller snakes like our brown snakes and our garter snakes eat a lot of common garden pests like bugs. Some of the bigger snakes like our fox snakes are great rodent control.”
The snake demonstration will be held near the shower house and playground. An aquatic critter catch takes place on the east side of County Road M47 at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. “I have 15-20 aquatic nets and we’ll use them to catch things in the water like aquatic insects and tadpoles and maybe some small fish and we can look at the things we find to help determine if we have good water quality or not so good water quality.”
A two mile hike will take place on Monday on the east side of the lake. It starts at 9:00 a.m.
