(Corning) Southwest Valley Schools Superintendent Chris Fenster says the districts’ return-to-learn plan has been reduced from 57-pages down to one as students return to the classroom today.
The new plan eliminates remote learning, except for medical emergencies and no requirement for masks. “We’re going to do everything we can to keep our kids safe,” said Superintendent Fenster. “We want to get back to the basics and back to education.”
Classes start on Monday, and Villisca Elementary students will soon enjoy new playground equipment in the coming months. The Villisca School Board recently approved a $300,000 state-of-the-art playground equipment project with a safer rubberized surface for the children. Fenster says the old wooden equipment has been around for 25-plus years. He says the weather has taken its toll on it. The equipment has been fixed many times and caused an injury for some children.
“We’ve everything we can to maintain the old equipment, and it’s time to come down, and the playground in Corning will probably follow this one,” said Fenster. ”
The district is giving Villisca patrons a chance to come and remove any of the equipment they would like to have before it is removed. The district will accept a free-will donation for any piece of the equipment.
Anyone interested in a piece of equipment should contact Jessie Forsythe at 712-826-2552. The equipment can be claimed on a first-come, first-serve basis and removed after school hours or weekends. The installation of the new equipment is expected to start in the coming weeks.
