(Des Moines) Blizzard conditions will continue to impact travel across western Iowa today. A Blizzard Warning is in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
Roger Vachalek, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says strong and gusty northwest winds coupled with moderate to heavy snowfall will continue to produce blizzard to near blizzard conditions across the region today. Vachalek says it doesn’t appear the weather conditions will improve quickly for today.
Vachalek says gusty winds will continue to blow out of the northwest at 30 to 35 miles per hour at times.
Vachalek says an additional two-top-four inches of snow are expected today, adding up to about six inches of snow across western Iowa by the time the storm passes through the region.
Significant travel impacts are occurring or expected to occur along Interstate 80 and Interstate 35 in western Iowa. Additional snow accumulations of three to five inches are forecast.
Travel will be difficult due to blowing snow areas, which could significantly reduce visibility and impact the morning and evening commutes in the area today.
The National Weather Service says travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. Motorists who become stranded are advised to stay with their vehicle.
