(Des Moines) Tom Moore is serving his 4th term as a state representative.
The republican from Griswold says an update to the bottle bill could be on the horizon. “I’m really interested in getting something done on the bottle bill. We’ve lost and our return rate percentage has declined from in the 90’s down into the low 70’s. We need to get something done so that we have viable redemption centers.”
Moore notes the original bill was put in place in the 70’s to keep the ditches cleaned up. Which containers receive a refund may need to be updated. “Water bottles aren’t charged at all and we’ve got to look at the whole thing. I think the atmosphere is right now to do something and so we have to get something done.”
Moore adds the state government wants to distance itself from having a stance on abortion. Another priority this session includes a tax relief bill. “We are going to look at returning more of the people’s money to them. Our emergency funds are full. We are looking at returning more money to the people.”
Depending on moves made by Governor Kim Reynolds, the penny sales tax could be increased which Moore says would lead to a lot of serious conversations. Refining election laws is another potential topic to be tackled in the months ahead.
