(Area) Despite warmer than normal weather for this time of year the opening of Iowa’s pheasant hunting season has still gone over well.
Kelsey Fleming is a Private Lands Biologist in Southwest Iowa. She calls the opening weekend a success for those that got out.
“Weather conditions weren’t necessarily ideal it was warmer and pretty windy. Despite the weather we are hearing good reports from people that got out. They were having success and seeing a lot of birds. Places where the crops were out hunters were fairing better than those that still had crops in.”
There had been a lot of excitement surrounding last weekend’s opener. “Based off the August roadside survey the DNR found that pheasant numbers were pretty good around the state averaging 20 pheasants per route in six of the nine survey regions. That was the highest since 2007 so I know hunters were really excited to get out there.”
The pheasant season is open through January 10th.
