(Audubon) Two powerhouse football team’s matchup in the 3rd round of the state playoffs on Friday night when Audubon hosts Newell-Fonda. The Mustangs advance with wins over West Bend-Mallard and Kingsley-Pierson. Audubon eliminated Bedford and East Mills.
Wheelers Head Coach Sean Birks says Newell-Fonda is a solid team and a couple of plays away from defeating highly rated Remsen-St. Mary’s during the regular season. The Mustangs lost the game 30-28,- the only blemish on the season.
Newell-Fonda has rushed for a combined 2,017 yards, and 1,082 yards passing.
Newell-Fonda is facing a stout Audubon defense that has given up only 29-points in seven games. Birks says a lot of that success comes from a change in their scheme on defense. He says the players are more comfortable playing under this type of attack.
Coach Birks says it wasn’t as big of an adjustment on the defensive line, not mention the Wheelers athleticism in the secondary.
Birks says holding Newell-Fonda to short gains on first down is going to be critical.
The Wheelers Offense will certainly test the Mustangs defense. Gavyn Smith leads the team in rushing with 1,022 yards, and has thrown for another 789 yards in seven games.
Coach Birks says getting an explosive play now and again will be critical to the success of his team on Friday night.
