(Anita) CAM won their 10th straight boys basketball game on Tuesday night. The Cougars downed Stanton 65-51 to advance to a district final.
CAM built an early 10-3 lead and held Stanton to just two field goals in the 1st quarter. The Vikings hit a couple shots beyond the arc to get within 12-9 early in the 2nd quarter. For the most part the Cougars were in front by anywhere from two to seven points in the 2nd until Lane Spieker hit a deep three-pointer right before halftime to stretch the CAM advantage to 37-27.
The early stages of the 3rd quarter belonged to the Cougars. The first 2:15 after halftime saw CAM use a quick 9-0 stretch to build the lead to 19. Stanton went nearly four minutes without scoring in the 3rd quarter. When they did finally get something to fall they did their best to make up for lost time. Stanton was able to push the pace and scored the final 11 point of the frame to close within 50-38 heading into the 4th. Colby Royal drilled a clutch 3-pointer at the end of the 3rd to give give Stanton some hope for a comeback.
CAM managed the clock and the game situation much better in the 4th quarter than they did at the end of the 3rd. They were able to break Stanton’s press and upon doing so they capitalized with open layups down the stretch. Jacob Holste had 16 points, Connor McKee 15, Ben Tibken 14, and Nate Hensley 11.
Stanton got 16 points from Tyler Peterson, but the Vikings high scoring senior had to work hard for everything he earned. Day finished with 12 points and Colton Thornburg pitched in 10. The Vikings are ousted with a record of 19-4. It’s their first loss by more than three points all season.
CAM moves to 19-4 on the season heading into a showdown with #10 Martensdale-St. Marys on Thursday. The winner will play in a substate game on Saturday.
