(Des Moines) The Iowa House this week introduced two bills out of committee to address access and affordability of child care.
One of the bills assigned to a subcommittee addresses the “cliff effect” in the childcare assistance program.
“This bill extends the financial eligibility to those families receiving Child Care Assistance with a staggered increase in payment for the family to begin preparing them to pay for child care costs,” said House District 20 Representative Tom Moore.
Another bill currently moving through the Iowa legislature addresses violence in the classroom.
“The Bill would offer specialized spaces in school districts with smaller class sizes and more individual attention,” explained Moore. “It would also provide guidelines for actions school employees can take to address potentially violent school behavior, and funding would be added for standard training and employer protections from disciplinary actions by the schools.”
In other activity; The Iowa Senate’s appropriations committee approved a supplemental Bill that would add an additional $20 million to assist in the recovery from the 2019 flooding along the Missouri River. Senator Tom Shipley of Nodaway believes a good portion of this extra funding will address levee repairs in southwest Iowa.
This $20 million is in addition to the $15 million that Governor Reynolds had originally allocated.
