(Avoca) From Avo-Ha to AHSTW and everything in between, Jason Holst has been a part of it. The Viking lifer has spent 23 years as the head baseball coach at his alma mater and 20 years on the football staff. He currently serves as the district’s Activities Director as well.
Spending his summers coaching his brother’s youth baseball team helped launch his love for coaching and it grew even more when he got an opportunity during his college years to be a junior high basketball coach. Holst says patience is one of the key traits he’s found to be vital to success. “It’s not going to happen overnight. I think that’s the toughest thing for a younger coach. I just expected it to happen, but it just takes time and you’ve got to be patient and roll with the punches.”
Holst says his life would be more boring in another career field. “With teaching and coaching there’s something different every day.” He adds, “It keeps you fresh, it keeps you alert, there is never a dull moment.”
Holst guided his 2006 and 2007 teams to the Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament.
